The first ever Light Nelson event was held in July 2013 when Queens Gardens was transformed into a magical environment with almost 20 stunning light related art projects positioned throughout the park. Additional projects at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology and Nelson School of Music. No one was quite prepared for the numbers of visitors to the park (16,000 over three days). The event clearly captured everybodies imagination.
Part of the success of Light Nelson was probably at least partially due the fact that not only was the event free, it was also kept free from any commercial activity; There was no merchandising, no donation boxes and no sponsors logos that would detract from the artwork. The Light Nelson event was accessible to all and attracted a very wide demographic of people; The event was visited and enjoyed by a very wide range of ages and people from many different backgrounds.
This could not have been achieved had it not been for the large commitment of the artists, sponsors, benefactors, volunteers and members of the Light Nelson Charitable Trust.
